STANDARDS IN EDUCATION

ĀYU Council is the first organization to modernize the Indian Traditional Āyurvedic Medicine (TAM) curriculum for Western students in over 100 years. Starting from a clean slate, we reorganized the sequence of classical knowledge based on the secular, scientific foundations of Traditional Āyurvedic Medicine (TAM). We restructured the presentation of information from Traditional Āyurvedic medical literature into a more linear fashion with holistic and reductionist perspectives. This updated format is designed specifically for students without backgrounds in Sanskrit or Vedic sciences and English as the primary language of instruction.

Today, the professional educational standards for Traditional Āyurvedic Medicine (TAM) in India require advanced study well beyond Western expectations. The contents and presentation of the curriculum are designed for practice in India. The current curriculum has remained fairly constant since 1970 as a product of political influence and colonialism. This current format creates many challenges to learning the classical science, especially for Western students.

ĀYU Council recognizes that we have a unique opportunity in the US because of the unlicensed, unrecognized status of Āyurveda. With correct effort and investment, we can advance Traditional Āyurvedic Medicine (TAM) in the West beyond its current state in India.
